Provision for Hearing Impaired Children (P-HIC) at Hacton Primary School - Approved
The Provision for Hearing Impaired Children is a 24 place provision for Hearing Impaired pupils from Nursery to Year 6.
It is a total communication provision which means sign language and/or spoken language is used to support pupils depending on their individual needs.
The Provision for Hearing Impaired Children consists of 4 classrooms and a Speech and Language Therapy room for the purpose of teaching Hearing Impaired pupils. These rooms form part of the mainstream school. There 4 Teachers of the Deaf (ToDs), 3 Communication Support Workers (CSWs), 1 specialist Nursery Nurse and 2 1-to-1 signing Teaching Assistants.
Audiological equipment is checked daily to ensure the children can access speech, environmental sounds or other acoustic information.
We provide a range of provision. This can be small group Language and Literacy (and/or Maths) lessons in the Provision for Hearing Impaired Children with a qualified Teacher of the Deaf. These lessons will:
Focus on developing and enriching English language skills.Good language is essential for good literacy.
Be taught at a pace which meets the needs of the group.
Use visual aids and resources to facilitate learning.
Use modified language which the children can access, understand and respond to the lesson.
All other subjects are taught in the mainstream where Hearing Impaired children are supported in the classroom by a Communication Support Workers or Teachers of the Deaf.
