Lime Academy Ravensbourne

Ravensbourne is an all through Special School for students with severe and complex learning needs aged 2-19. 

Ages 2 to 4:Children attend our Early Years Assessment centre. They receive an initial placement of 2-5 days per week, depending on their age, need and family preference. Many children will stay at Ravensbourne School after age 4 but some will move to other special schools or mainstream schools appropriate to their needs. 

Ages 4-16:Pupils in this age range attend the main school. They will be on a pathway and follow a curriculum designed to meet their individual needs.

Ages 16-19:Young people attend the 6th Form Department where they follow a functional accreditation programme designed to prepare them for the next stage in their lives. 


Ravensbourne School has a range of specialist equipment in classes and specialist rooms including:

High and low tech communication equipment

A magic carpet

A Smartdeck platform

A family room room 

Eye gaze equipment

Interactive whiteboards

A hydrotherapy pool

A soft play room

Sensory rooms

Most classes have hoists

Outdoor playground equipment

Pupils either attend making waves sessions in the schools hydrotherapy pool or attend swimming lessons at Central Park.

Music Therapy is available to support communication and social skills.

School nurses are on-site at the school to support pupils medical needs and training. We also have a welfare specialist TA who oversees the administration of medication.

We have a family support worker whose role includes supporting parents access services for their child.

We value our relationship with parents/ carers . Teachers are in daily contact through email or a home school book. A weekly newsletter updates parents on events in school. We hold shared learning sessions every half term where parents/ carers are invited to come into school and learn with their child.


We have an active Parent’s Association that supports with fundraising and a range of social activities for pupils and their families.

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

All students who attend have an EHCP or are on an assessment placement pending an EHCP.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Each child will be allocated a key worker. A home visit will be made before the child start school Parents are invited into school when their child first joins us to spend time with them in class to ensure they are settled and happy in their new environment.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

We follow a personalised and bespoke curriculum designed to meet the individual academic, social,communication and care needs of each student.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Targets are sent home each term. Teachers communicate regularly with parents through a home/ school dairy or using group call. A weekly newsletter reports on events that have been happening or that are planned in the near future.

We hold 2 parents evenings - 1 in the Autumn Term and 1 in the Summer Term. Each child has a person centred annual review of their EHCP.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

We have school nurses on site. We also have a welfare specialist support TA. We have a family support worker who works closely with parents. 

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We have OT, Physios, SaLT, school nurses and a music therapist all working within the school. We have close links with a range of outside agencies including the community pediatrician, CAMHS and the Children and Disabilities Team. 

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Staff receive a range of specialised training to ensure they can meet the needs of the students in our setting including administration of emergency medication, manual handling and hoist training, team teach, MOVE, intensive interaction and TEACCH.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Any school trips that are arranged are carefully planned to ensure they are suitable and appropriate for our students. 

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

The school is fully wheelchair accessible. Most classrooms have overhead hoists. We also have several mobile hoists in school. All changing areas also have overhead hoists. The hydrotherapy pool is fully wheelchair accessible. 

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We have links with specialist settings for our students when they leave us at 19. We support parents throughout the transition process to ensure the correct placement is found. 

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We have a range of specialist resources designed to meet the needs of our pupils including workstations, high and low tech communication devices, eye gaze, a smart deck platform, sensory areas and break areas. Classrooms are set up to meet the specific the needs of the students. 

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

This forms part of the EHCP process.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in all aspects of school life. We invite parents to join us in shared learning sessions. We have 2 parents evenings over the course of the year. 

Annual review meetings ensure that parents voices are heard in regards to the desired outcomes for their child.
