Sycamore Trust

Dear friends of the Sycamore Trust

The sun is shining and the summer holidays are almost here!  We’ve got some ideas to amuse the young people throughout the holiday period and some important dates for the autumn, including our next fundraiser on 24th September. Don’t forget to check our website at www.sycamoretrust.org.uk for all the latest news, which you will also see if you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Instagram.

Save the date – 24th September 2019

We’re going to be holding a fundraising quiz night at the Tandoori Lounge in Hornchurch on September 24th, starting at 7 pm.  We need teams of 4-6 people to take part in what is always a really enjoyable evening.  Every month this local Punjabi restaurant holds a charity fundraiser and on Tuesday 24th September, it’s our turn.  It’s £22.50 per person to take part which of course, includes your meal and we’re hoping to fill every available place and raise valuable funds.  For more details and how to book, drop a line to marketing@sycamoretrust.org.uk but don’t hang about, we’ve had quite a bit of interest already!

Wish us luck!

We’ve got our fingers crossed for the event tonight at the Barking & Dagenham Chamber of Commerce Awards, the annual celebration of business in the borough of Barking and Dagenham.  Last year we were honoured with the ‘Community Involvement’ Award and this year we have been nominated in three categories; Customer Service, Employer of the Year and Innovation & Use of Digital Media.  We’ll be tweeting details of the awards throughout the evening and we’ll have full details on our website and social media platforms if we’re lucky enough to be successful.  Fingers crossed!

Anyone for tennis?

Have you been down to the Liberty Centre lately? There’s a brand new area that’s opened just in time for Wimbledon.  It’s the new Table Tennis Lounge, close to the Disney Store, Muffin Break and Waterstones.  It’s a great new idea that is open now and will be open throughout the school holidays and best of all, it’s free!

If you want to play, simply go along to the Customer Service desk and the Liberty will loan you bats & balls.  All you have to do is take them back to the desk afterwards.

We’ll be organising some closed sessions for our youth clubs during the summer holidays so look out for our correspondence in the next couple of days.

A walk in the woods!

The Autism Ambassadors have presented in some unusual places over the years, but this was the first time they’d ever been in a cabin in the woods!  Read all about their trip to the ELHAP centre in Redbridge here; https://bit.ly/2LQNt1w

Sensory Room at the Autism Hub

There's a treat in store for any visitors to the Autism Hub in Romford, now that we've refurbished our sensory room.  Ever since the Hub opened in the Liberty Shopping Centre in 2015, we've had a sensory room available to anyone on the spectrum who needed a space to relax and calm down if needed. A shopping centre, with all the bright lights, noise and various smells can be quite challenging for people on the autistic spectrum, so we've always been able to offer the sensory room as a quiet space for anyone who needed it.  And we've been able to purchase some new items, all designed to help anyone who finds the shopping experience a little overwhelming. The Autism Hub is situated in Laurie Walk in the Liberty Centre - if you follow the Calm Lane, it will take you straight to our door.  Anyone can use the sensory room, just call in when you feel the need.  Click here for Autism Hub opening times; http://www.sycamoretrust.org.uk/latest/article/Sensory-treat-in-store%21

D2BD 2020!

It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating the success of our Dare to be Different campaign for Autism Awareness Week in April.  But we could never be accused of resting on our laurels because we’re already planning D2BD 2020!  The date is Friday 3rd April and we’ll have more news about our activities in the run-up to Autism Awareness Week next April, but for now, all you need to know is that Dare to be Different will return next spring, on Friday 3rd April!

Summer holiday activity at the Science Museum!

There are lots of activities over the summer holiday period for all the family at the Science Museum.  There are events, workshops, and exhibitions throughout the summer for the young (and old!) scientist in your family and admission to the museum is free.  The Science Museum is close to South Kensington station on the District Line.  For more information and to plan your visit, click here; https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visit

Credit cards accepted!

For some years now, Sycamore Trust members have had to call into the office in Dagenham or send a cheque for membership or Stubbers or any of the other activities that we offer.  But we can now offer the facility to pay over the phone using a credit or debit card.  Cheques in the post and cash in person are still accepted as are bank transfers but for a quicker way to pay, just give us a call.
