Child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS)
The community based Havering child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) offers help to young people from birth up to the age of 18 who are experiencing emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties.
The Havering CAMHS team is based in a local clinic and offers various support such as assessment of development problems, autism, hyperactivity, depression, and early onset psychosis and brief interventions. The team also offers support to families and carers.
During a child or young person’s development, there may be periods when they or their family’s ability to cope with difficult emotions or behaviour can put extreme pressures on relationships. We work with children and young people as early on as possible during these difficulties to turn the situation around.
Getting advice
Young people in the Getting Advice and Signposting needs based group either have mild or temporary difficulties, or may have ongoing needs but are choosing to self manage, or are on the road to recovery.
What is offered is: consultation to the family, or professionals in their network, which offers experienced decision making about how best to help.
Getting help
Young people in the Getting Help needs based group are those that would benefit from focused evidence based treatment.
What is offered is: evidence based therapy (where improvement in wellbeing is expected) delivered within a short timeframe. There should be explicit agreement with the young person at the outset of what a successful outcome would look like for them.
Getting more help
Young people in the Getting More Help needs group are those that would benefit from extensive long term treatment, which may include inpatient care.
What is offered is: evidence based therapy where improvement in wellbeing is expected delivered within either; in a protracted timeframe or as a piece of joint work between two or more professionals.
Risk support
Young people in the Getting Risk Support needs based group are not engaging in treatment, or for whom treatment is not effective, yet they remain at considerable risk to themselves or others.
What is offered is: Individually tailored support with the aim of reducing the risk of harm and improving a young person’s response to crisis. Care plans are agreed, with the family through, close interagency collaboration.
Are you 17+

- A referral to adult mental health services such as the community recovery team or adult therapy services.
- Support to identify other counselling or support services available to you within the community.
- Discussion with your GP about what support they might be able to offer you
