The Campion School for Boys

Number of pupils on roll: 150 pupils.  Age range: 11 - 18 years (Boys).

The Campion School aims to be an outstanding Roman Catholic school with a strong and united community in which everyone contributes to the school’s religious and educational objectives.

The school has developed its own distinctive Catholic ethos and traditions, building on those first endowed upon it by the Jesuits. It seeks to draw on the long-established Jesuit educational ideals of a Catholic community in which endeavour and opportunity lead students to the highest levels of achievement. The most recent Diocesan and Ofsted inspections described the school as an ‘outstanding Catholic school’ and a ‘good school with many outstanding features’. We are proud of our successes and have ambitious plans to develop and improve the school further. “Success and personal endeavour are encouraged, rewarded and celebrated. There is a strong ethos of not only wanting to do well but about being proud of doing so.”

We have a long-standing tradition of providing a rich and varied curriculum to stimulate and interest students. Each individual is given the appropriate support to achieve their full potential.

Our Aims and Ethos

The Campion School has three main aims:

  • To lead young people to faith in Christ and to mature understanding of the Catholic faith
  • To develop in its pupils inquiring minds through the study of a broad range of subjects and through the encouragement of self-discipline and hard work in the pursuit of excellence
  • To encourage young people to fully develop themselves intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually through academic study and through participation in extra-curricular activities.

Description

The Learning Support Department

The role of the Learning Support Department is to work with staff, students and parents in order to help maximise students’ achievements and to ensure progress. All students have the right to an education which is appropriate to them as individuals. Therefore it is our aim to provide high quality support to ensure that all students are included and make progress; as well as minimising the difficulties that students will experience. Student progress is monitored through the assessment procedure which is in place for all students.

We aim to achieve this by adopting three principles that are essential to developing a more inclusive curriculum.

Three principles for inclusion

Setting suitable learning challenges - We aim to give every student the opportunity to experience success in learning and to achieve as high a standard as possible.

Responding to students’ diverse learning needs - We take into account the different backgrounds, experiences, interests and strengths which influence the way in which students learn when we plan our approaches to teaching and learning.

Overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of students - We recognise that a minority of students will have particular learning and assessment requirements that will create barriers to learning if we do not address them through special arrangements.

It is also important we:

  • Listen to students’ opinions, questions and anxieties
  • Employ positive marking techniques
  • Recognise, celebrate and reward progress however small
  • Be consistent and fair to all students
  • Enable students to make choices and decisions about their work so they feel valued
  • Encourage good relationships with students and recognise that mutual respect and trust are important
