FIG Pre-School

The Family Information Group (FIG) is a charity based in Harold Hill.
FIG provides an integrated playgroup during term time for children with additional needs and other local children aged 2-5 years old.


FIG also provides playschemes during school holidays for disabled children aged 5-15. The frequency of the schemes depends on funding available.

Due to COVID-19 we will be closed from Friday 3rd April for the foreseeable future

Speech Project

 Many children who attend the playgroup have speech difficulties and we have been successful in a 3 year bid for funding from BBC Children in Need for a Speech Project within the playgroup with our 2-4 year olds.

 Through this funding we employ a Speech Worker who is responsible for planning activities that will help to improve children’s speech development and communication skills. These activities take place within the playgroup with children either one to one or in small groups. The activities are fun and enjoyable for all the children who take part.

 We are currently in year 2 of this project and have seen a marked improvement in the speech and language skills of all the children who came to us with speech concerns. We will be seeking further funding to ensure that this vital work can continue in the future.

FIG Playgroup is open Monday to Friday, term time, between 8:30am and 3pm. Morning, afternoon and limited full day sessions are available.
FIG Playscheme operates during school holidays (depending on funding) between 10am and 3pm daily.

Referral Details

The FIG Playgroup is accessed via a waiting list. Parents can put their child's name on the list at any time by phoning, or emailing the office. Children will be allocated a place when old enough to attend, subject to places being available and funding, or training being in place to provide any additional care that their child may require.
The FIG Playscheme is accessed via a referral system. In the first instance parents may phone the FIG office to ask that they be sent an application form for their child. This form will need to be completed by the parent, and then endorsed by a professional who works with their child and knows their needs, e.g. School SENCO, class teacher or social worker. A meeting is then held between FIG and the London Borough of Havering to decide which children are eligible, and should receive a service. The available playscheme days are then shared between all eligible children,


Our building is fully accessible for wheelchair users. We have an accessible bathroom with a changing bed and hoist. Parking for the disabled is available near to the building entrance.

9.2 Supporting children with special educational needs

 Policy statement

 We provide an environment in which all children with special educational needs (SEN) are supported to reach their full potential.

 We have regard for the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2014).

  • We have in place a clear approach for identifying, responding to, and meeting children’s SEN[1].
  • We support and involve parents (and where relevant children), actively listening to, and acting on their wishes and concerns.
  • We work in partnership with the local authority and other external agencies to ensure the best outcomes for children with SEN and their families.
  • We regularly monitor and review our policy, practice and provision and, if necessary, make adjustments.

 Procedures

 [For group provision: We designate a member of staff to be the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and give her name to parents. Our SENCO is:

  •  The SENCO works closely with our managers and other colleagues and has responsibility for the day-to-day operation of our Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs Policy and for co-ordinating provision for children with SEN.
  • We ensure that the provision for children with SEN is the responsibility of all members of the setting.
  • We ensure that our inclusive admissions practice ensures equality of access and opportunity.
  • We provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum for all children.
  • We apply SEN support to ensure early identification of children with SEN.
  • We use the graduated approach system (assess, plan, do and review) applied in increasing detail and frequency to ensure that children progress.
  • We ensure that parents are involved at all stages of the assessment, planning, provision and review of their children's special education including all decision making processes
  • We where appropriate, take into account children’s views and wishes in decisions being made about them, relevant to their level understanding.
  • We provide parents with information on local sources of support and advice e.g. Local Offer, Information, Advice and Support Service.
  • We liaise and work with other external agencies to help improve outcomes for children with SEN.
  • We have systems in place for referring children for further assessment e.g. Common Assessment Framework/Early Help Assessment and Education, Health and Care (EHC) assessment.
  • We provide resources (human and financial) to implement our Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs Policy.
  • We ensure that all our staff are aware of our Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs Policy and the procedures for identifying, assessing and making provision for children with SEN. We provide in-service training for practitioners and volunteers.
  • We raise awareness of our special education provision via our promotional materials.
  • We ensure the effectiveness of our special educational needs provision by collecting information from a range of sources e.g. action plan reviews, staff and management meetings, parental and external agency's views, inspections and complaints. This information is regularly reviewed.
  • We provide a complaints procedure.
  • We monitor and review our policy annually.
