Havering Children's Centres

Children's Centres are for all families with children under 12 years old, parents to be and their communities. They provide a range of support services to you and your children during their childhood. Children's Centres can provide advice, support and information on your child's health, development, education and care. We offer free groups, activities and services for families. Our Family Support Workers and Family Intervention Workers can provide you and your family with one-to-one support within your family home and the community

EPEC Being a Parent course

What is the EPEC Being a Parent Course?

The Empowering Parents Empowering Communities (EPEC) Being a Parent course aims to improve child development and outcomes, parenting, family resilience, and family relationships. The Being a Parent course creates a trusting group ethos, where parents are encouraged and supported to explore: 

• Positive behaviour management and discipline strategies.

• Managing parent and family stress.

• Understanding and managing children’s feelings.

• Parent listening, communication, play, and interaction skills.

• Attachment and parent-child relationships.

• Parenting roles, expectations and culture. 

Why is it different?

The Being a Parent Course runs over 8 weeks and is completely free. In addition to the course, a free on-site crèche is offered each session. It is run by accredited parent volunteers who have completed the EPEC training course. They receive ongoing support and supervision from the EPEC Hub. Their experiences, backgrounds, skills, and qualities make each session inviting and engaging. 

Who is the course for?

The Being a Parent Course is aimed at parents in Havering who have one or more children between the ages of 2 to 11 years. The course content relates well to becoming school ready and is recognised by pre-schools, nurseries, early years settings, children’s centres and schools in the London Borough of Havering.

Before the Being a Parent Course begins there is a coffee session where you can learn more about what is involved and meet the other parents that are interested in coming.

EPEC Living with Teenagers Course

What is the EPEC Living with Teenagers Course

The Empowering Parents Empowering Communities (EPEC) 8 week Living with Teenagers course aims to provide low cost, accessible and effective community-based parenting support for parents of adolescents aged 11-16 years. It creates a trusting group ethos, where parents are encouraged and supported to explore strategies to: 

  • Improve young people’s social, emotional and behavioural development
  • Improve young people’s well being
  • Reduce adolescent and family difficulties
  • Improve parent confidence
  • Improve parenting skills and satisfaction
  • Improve social and community connectedness 

Why is it different?

 The Living with Teenagers course is completely free and is co-facilitated by accredited volunteer parent group leaders who have completed EPEC training. They receive ongoing support and supervision from the EPEC Hub. Their experiences, backgrounds, skills, and qualities make each session inviting and engaging. On successful completion, parents receive an accredited Level 1 certificate through AQA. 

Who is the course for? 

The Living with Teenagers Course is aimed at parents in Havering who have one or more children between the ages of 11- 16 years. The course content includes: managing risk; family meetings; exploring what it is like to be a teenager today; parental wellbeing; listening and communication styles; expressing and acknowledging feelings; privilege removal; household rules and discipline. This evidence-based course is recognised nationwide and is written by the Centre for Parent and Child Support in South London and Maudsley Hospital, which is funded by the NHS.

Incredible Years Babies Course

Incredible Years Babies Course

The Incredible Years Parents and Babies Programme support parents and their babies.

 The Parents & Babies programme consists of a 6 week programme focused on helping parents observe and communicate with their babies and learn ways to provide nurturing and responsive care including physical, tactile, and visual stimulation as well as verbal communication.

It is a great way to bond with your baby, make friends and to feel good about yourself as a parent. 

About the course

The course is FREE and runs for 6 weeks, 2 hour sessions weekly.

Benefits of the course The course is aimed for parents and babies aged 0-12 months, You WILL need to bring your baby with you.

  • FREE course.
  • Refreshments provided.
  • Learn to feel confident in yourself as a parent
  • Learn the cognitive development of your baby and how these early years are so important.
  • You and your baby build a scrap book together of everything you have learnt.
  • Certificate and a little something for your hard work.

Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities

The Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities is a culturally sensitive parenting programme for parents of 3-18 year olds. This programme incorporates 5 main components:  positive parenting, enhancing relationships, community engagement and child development taking into account cultural/spiritual beliefs.

This course also covers issues affecting parenting such as domestic abuse, alcohol, drugs, mental health, gangs, challenging behaviour.

The course is FREE and runs for 13 weeks, 3 hours per week.

STOP

The STOP parenting programme aim is to empower parents to have a greater understanding about the developmental process of their teenage child.

Sessions include; alcohol, conflict and aggression management, sex and relationship awareness, praise and encouragement, and setting the limits.

Mellow Babies

The Mellow Babies programme is a comprehensive  parenting programme for young parents to explore past relationships and experiences, and to provide support/knowledge around child development and routines. This programme also supports positive attachment and improves child behaviours.

About the course

The course is FREE and runs for 14 weeks, all day.

Parent Surgery

Parent Surgery is one to one parenting support/ advice offered to all parents who have children aged 0- 18 years.

About Parent Surgery

Parent Surgery is FREE and the length of support can be a one off session, or a course of sessions, depending on the support you would like to receive.

 

Benefits of Parent Surgery 

Parent Surgery is provided for ALL parenting within the London Borough of Havering who would like to receive some help, advice or guidance in relation to parenting.
