SEND support for youth offenders

The SEND Code of Practice aged 0-25 years is statutory guidance for organisations who work with and support children and young people with special educational needs and a range of institutions and bodies must have regard to it. It sets out rights for children and young people in custody.

This includes the right to:

  • keep an education, health and care (EHC) plan on hold while being detained
  • having special provision as set out in the EHC plan continued during custody (including health)
  • to request an EHC plan while detained

 

Youth offending support

Support provided to youth offenders in custody will be different based on individual needs.This support is offered when a young person is subject to a community court order or released on licence from custody.

It may include:

  • substance misuse screening and support
  • physical and mental health screening and support
  • speech and language screening and support
  • parenting support
  • gangs mentoring
  • sport health projects
  • careers advise and support
  • housing support  

You will usually be referred to the youth offending service by the Police or the criminal courts.

Youth offending speech and language therapist

Havering recognises how important it is that young people are not at a disadvantage because of their speech, language and communication or due to their educational attainments or literacy difficulties.

Havering has a speech and language therapist (SALT) worker that:

  • trains staff on the impact of speech and language difficulties for young people
  • screens and assesses all young people on community order on their speech and language abilities
  • provides interventions for young people that want support with their difficulties with speech and language
  • provides strategies and support plans for young people and any other services working with the young person, including parents and carers
